So what are the Chakras? Chakras are centres of spinning energy. In sanskrit it literally means "Wheel". They govern us physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and energetically. The Chakras have different levels of activity. When they are open and working together at balanced, equal levels, they are considered to be operating normally. Ideally, all Chakras would contribute to our health and well being. Not just the heart as some people may think. If all the Chakras are working together as one, our instincts would work together with our feelings and thinking. However, this is usually not the case. Some Chakras are not open enough, and to compensate, other chakras are over-active. What everyone should strive for is a fully functional Chakra System.

There are many many thoughts, beliefs, and techniques to balance the Chakras. When an over-active Chakra is discovered, it is likely that another Chakra on the opposite end of the spectrum is under-active. For example... Someone with an over-active Brow or Crown Chakra is likely to have a Root Chakra that is either under-funtioning or not functioning at all. The ideal route to take in the recalibration, in this case, is to activate the Root Chakra. You will notice that the over-active Crown , Brow, or whichever, will start to calm down and fall back into alignment. This is only the tip of the iceburg. The Root Chakra, also called Muladhara, is located at the base of the spine. Its main function is survival, grounding, food, shelter, safety, comfort and belonging. You can tell if your root chakra is closed if you often feel stuck and sluggish; you experience unrelenting stress because of a belief that you must rely on external circumstances; you may have persistent financial problems and find yourself in a less-than-ideal career.

Physically it governs the base of spine, legs, feet, rectum, coccygeal plexus, large intestine, and anus.

Located in the lower abdomen, below the navel and just above the gentals, the Sacral Chakra, also called Swadhisthana, is a power center directly related to sexuality, creativity, and emotions. The Egyptians thought it to be the most important of the Chakras and the key to a long lasting life. It is everyone's connection to procreation and bringing new life.

When it is open and operating correctly, your feelings flow freely, and are expressed without you being over-emotional. You are open to intimacy and you can be passionate and lively. You have no problems dealing with your sexuality. If you tend to be stiff and unemotional, the Sacral Chakra isn’t performing up to snub. You might not be open to people in general. If your Sacral Chakra is weak, you struggle with a healthy self-image; you experience difficulty allowing yourself to become emotionally and sexually intimate; you move from one relationship to another, desperately trying to find “the one” yet lacking the sense that you are worthy of love. Most notably, your libido is very low. If this chakra is over-active, you tend to be emotional all the time. You’ll feel emotionally attached to people and you can be very sexual.

Physically it govens sexual organs, lower back, pelvis/hips, kidney, bladder, and prostate.

The Heart Chakra, also called Anahata, is located in the center of the chest right next to your physical heart. It is related to love, but not just the love for others, but self-love and self-acceptance. It is also the mediator in the psyche: mind and body, male and female, persona and shadow, ego and unity.

When your Heart chakra is under-active you are very cold and distant. If it is over-active, you might experience feelings of hatred, bitterness, anger, jealousy, grief, self-centeredness, fear of being lonely.

The Throat Chakra, also called Vishudda, is located at the base of the throat. The Throat Chakra is paramount if you want to improve your self-expression, communication, and independence.

Being that the Throat Chakra is about self-expression and communication, when it is open, you have no problems expressing yourself, and you might be doing so as an artist. When this chakra is performing at a low level, you tend to not speak much, and you probably are introverted and shy. Not speaking the truth may block this chakra. If you are known as the ‘quiet one’ and if you are frustrated because you don’t feel that other people hear what you have to say, your throat chakra is blocked. If this chakra is over-active, you tend to speak too much, usually to domineer and keep people at a distance. Lack of self expression, judgment, lack of faith, challenged to make decisions, and dishonesty and all further signs of a Throat Chakra that is out of balance.

Physically, it governs the thyroid gland, vocal cords, neck vertebrae, jaw, mouth, teeth, gums, esophagus, parathyroid, hypothalamus, and laryngeal plexus

Right: To speak

Issue(s): Creativity, Communication

Themes: Resonance, harmony, vibration, sound, rhythm, connection, singing, chanting, writing, public speaking
